Pet of the Month
Laika
8 month old Labrador puppy
Laika
was brought into the Totton Clinic in June having been hit by a car near her
home. She sustained severe injuries to her back legs. Thankfully there were
no broken bones, but she had a lot of skin loss. Laika was anaesthetised and
the wounds were cleaned and surgically repaired where possible. The injuries
required regular dressing changes over the following weeks. Throughout the
whole treatment Laika remained a very happy confident puppy. She never minded
coming in for her appointments to see us (probably because she enjoyed being
carried around and spoilt!). As she was so well behaved we even managed to
change her dressings without sedation, although she was bribed with tasty
food! Thankfully Laika has made a full recovery and has just been given the
all clear and is able to return to normal, no more cage rest! It took 11 weeks
of home care, nursing and a lot of veterinary treatment. She is very lucky!
Laika wasn’t insured and the total cost of her treatment was over £2000.
She was fortunate that her owners were able to fund her treatment, but for
some it may have been a very different story.
