POST OPERATIVE CARE OF RABBITS

1 Restrict exercise for 10 days. It may be necessary to confine your rabbit in their hutch/run during this time. Do not allow climbing up or down stairs or on and off the furniture during this time to avoid causing a strain on the wound. Hutch-bound rabbits should be kept on sheets of newspaper for 5 days. Change the newspaper as soon as it is soiled. Normal free exercise may be resumed after 10 days or when the stitches have been removed.

2 Do not allow your rabbit to lick, chew or scratch the wound/stitches. This may be prevented by fitting a buster collar - please ask at reception for details. Do not bathe the wound unless the veterinary surgeon advises you to.

3 Your rabbit may eat as soon as he/she wants to, especially a diet with plenty of fibre. Feeds we recommend are available from reception. Water and hay/grass should be available at all times.

4 If your rabbit does not eat or is eating but has not passed droppings within 24 hours after the operation then please contact the surgery.

Please contact the surgery if you have any further queries.
